Capuchino put forth its best defensive effort of the season on Friday night to defeat cross-town rival Mills 42-40 in front of a huge home crowd that rushed the court to celebrate with their schoolmates once the horn sounded and sent everybody involved with Capuchino athletics happy on the night.
The win improves the mustangs record to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in PAL league play while Mills goes to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in PAL league. The Mustangs got a solid performance from Marquez Mozeke who led all scorers with 21 points on 5 made 3 point shots from the field. Capuchino had a 39-26 lead with 3:49 to go in the game only to see Mills battle its way back into the game and take a lead of 40-39 with 13 seconds to play that’s when AJ Macaraeg decided to make his biggest basket to date on the final play.
“I thought we came out with good intensity tonight,” said Cap head coach Marty Ruiz. “We haven’t been too good on the defensive end of play in the PAL so far but tonightwe should great effort all night and really caused problems for Mills on defense.” “The home crowd made the difference tonight they supported us and gave us that extra juice that you need in games like this – I was happy that they got to celebrate with the players because they made a difference in the outcome.”
The Mustangs will return to action this week on Wednesday to take the top-ranked Menlo-Atherton 5:30 p.m. and then take on Burlingame high on Friday night at 7:45 p.m. both games at home.
